wisdom-tooth1

We recommend removing your wisdom teeth between the age of 17 and 19 to minimize complications. But we know how nervous oral surgery can make some patients. That’s why our office uses IV sedation for our wisdom tooth extractions. You can rest comfortably during the procedure and you won’t remember a thing when it’s over.

Wisdom Teeth—A Real Pain in the Mouth

As your wisdom teeth try to force their way through your gums, your smile can become susceptible to a wide range of trouble, including impaction, misalignment, jaw pain, and gum disease. Bacteria and food can find their way beneath an impacted tooth, causing infection. A molar that’s coming through at an odd angle can put pressure on your other teeth, leading to misalignment and potentially damaging healthy roots. And wisdom teeth that have developed cysts can damage your jaw, requiring more extensive surgery.

Making Wisdom Tooth Extraction Comfortable with Sedation

Having your wisdom teeth removed doesn’t have to be scary. Our office uses IV sedation to make you comfortable before the procedure begins. When you awaken afterwards, we bet you won’t even remember anything about the procedure at all.

It’s better to have your wisdom teeth removed sooner rather than later. More than just an annoyance, they can have serious consequences for your smile if left alone. Call our office today to set up an appointment with Dr. Heap. Removing your wisdom teeth now can save your smile.

Wisdom Teeth in Gilbert and Mesa, AZ

Almost everybody gets them at some point. Some come in straight, some come in sideways, some don’t come in at all. Wisdom teeth. Probably the least important body part for any human being. Even when they come in perfectly straight, we don’t chew that far back in our mouths to utilize them.

So for something that does us little good, how do they cause us so many problems?

There are a number of problems with wisdom teeth:

1. They are so far back in the mouth that they are nearly impossible for people to effectively keep clean. Most of them will get cavities, rot away, or break in half before too long.

2. When they come in at an angle they create abnormalities in the bone formation around the molar right next to it. So not only does the wisdom tooth end up with problems, your molars can can be effected as well.

3. When they don’t come in at all or partially come in, they leave a pocket around them which doesn’t fill in with bone This is basically a weak point in the bone. It can lead to jaw fracture if you were to get knocked in the jaw in that area.

4. Infection. Probably the biggest risk. When a wisdom tooth is partially in place, the anatomy of the bone and gums around it make it a trap for food and bacteria. A lot of people end up with abscesses from food trapped down under the gums by these wisdom teeth.

5. They might move your other teeth. This has been denied by many dentists and orthodontists and confirmed by others. It seems more than coincidence that someone has had braces and then as their wisdom teeth come in, their front teeth start getting crowded.

These are the reasons that for most people we recommend early wisdom teeth removal. When the wisdom teeth are forming in the bone they are relatively easy to remove. The longer we wait, the more chance there is of long roots, infection, etc. We recommend patients over the age of 15 to come in and at least take an x-ray to see how their wisdom teeth are developing and see if they should come out. The longer we wait, the harder it usually becomes.

At our office at Lakeside Cosmetic and Family Dentistry we remove most wisdom teeth in our office in Gilbert, AZ. Most of our patients enjoy being put “to sleep” during the procedure so that it is as comfortable and forgettable as possible.

Dr. Heap and Dr. Snell would be happy to visit with you for a free consultation to see if you would be a candidate for wisdom teeth removal in our office. Give us a call any time to set up an appointment.
